How do you obtain a marriage liscense?
Every couple getting married in Massachusetts must have a marriage license
issued in Massachusetts.
Three Steps: 1.) Obtain a medical certificate, 2.) Apply for a
marriage license, 3.) Return the signed license
Step 1: Obtain a
medical certificate
Massachusetts law requires that both of you obtain a medical
certificate. A medical certificate is good for 30 days and you should get
it no more than 90 days prior to wedding.
Step 2: Apply for a marriage license
You apply for your marriage license with any city or town clerk. Both
of you must be present when applying. It is very important to bring your
medical certificates with you. It usually takes 3 business days for the
clerk to prepare license. A marriage license is good for 60 days,
therefore you should apply for your license within 2 months of your
wedding date.
Step 3: Return the signed license
You should give your Justice of the Peace your marriage license before the
ceremony. After the ceremony has been performed your Justice of the Peace
must complete and sign the original license. They are responsible for
returning the license to the clerk that issued it. A few weeks after the
wedding, you can pick up a copy of your wedding certificate at the clerks
office.
Are there any
special requirements if one applicant is an immigrant?
If either of the parties has
arrived as an immigrant from a foreign country within five days, the
application may be filed at any time before the marriage and the
certificate shall be issued at any time after the filing. If you need more
information call The Registry of Vital Records and Statistics at: ( 617 )
740 2600.
